Friday September 20th 2019 Climate Change Protests
The Climate Change
Strike took place on Friday,
September 20th, 2019 across the globe to protest those that do not believe in climate change. What is climate change you may ask? Climate change is defined as a change in the
weather patterns and a drastic increase and decrease in temperatures. This is due to the fact that the Earth’s
temperatures are rising because there is a hole burning through the ozone layer, and therefore,
making the Earth hotter. The Polar Ice Caps are melting at an
alarming rate. This is causing the sea levels to rise,
causing coastal flooding. It is also
causing the water temperatures to increase, which is perfect for storms to form
in, creating larger natural disasters, such as hurricanes. Another
name for all of these events that are occurring is Global Warming. If
you live on the coast of Long Island, or on the West Coast of California,
Global Warming is impacting you every day.
This is all caused by humans abusing natural resources in order to live or make a profit. Cutting down trees, known as deforestation, for wood or more
land for the growing population is taking oxygen out of the air and producing
more carbon dioxide in the
air, which is harmful to humans. Some
countries and their leaders around the world do not believe in climate change,
which is a part of the problem.
Vocabulary Definitions:
Climate Change (noun) - a
change in global or regional climate patterns and attributed largely to
the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of
fossil fuels
Strike/Protest (noun) - a refusal or protest organized in an attempt to gain a concession or concessions from
their employer
Ozone layer (noun) -a region
of Earth's stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun's ultraviolet radiation
Polar Ice Caps (noun) - a high-latitude region
of a planet, dwarf planet,
or natural satellite that is covered in ice
Alarming (adjective) - worrying or disturbing
Hurricanes (noun) - a storm with a violent wind, in particular, a tropical cyclone in the
Caribbean
Global Warming (noun) - a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's
atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased
levels of carbon dioxide
Natural resources (noun) - materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and
fertile land that occurs in nature and can be used for economic gain that is
not renewable
Deforestation (noun) - the action of clearing a wide area of trees for personal gain
Carbon Dioxide (noun) - a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning carbon and
organic compounds and by respiration. It is naturally present in air and is
absorbed by plants in photosynthesis.
