Time to be Thankful!

Thanksgiving is celebrated every last Thursday of the month of November.   Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful and grateful for everything that you have.   Whether that is your health, your friends, or your family, it does not have to be anything materialistic .   There are many families that are less fortunate than us living across America that are not healthy, or any of their family members passed away, or they do not have anyone to spend the holiday with.   Some families do not have roofs over their heads or food to eat at dinner each and every night.   These are the people that are thankful for every little thing that you may do for them, even if it is as simple as giving them a coupon to get free food from a local fast-food restaurant.   Every little thing counts in the eyes of the less fortunate.   So be thankful for everything that you have and do not take it for granted .   Cherish every moment this holiday season with your loved ones, because you do not know when they

Veteran's Day, 11/11

Veteran’s Day is a special day always on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, November 11 th .   This day is set aside to remember all of the veterans of our nation that put their lives on the line to ensure that we, the American people, were safe and to make sure that no one would threaten our Democracy .   Veterans include men and women from many branches of the armed forces , such as the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Force, the Coast Guard, and the Marine Corps.   These veterans lived very hard lives during wars, especially during World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, the Iraqi War, and now the War on Terror .   Many of the veterans were away from their friends and family for long periods of time, not knowing if they would make it home alive to see their loved ones.   The conditions that these veterans were once in were terrible.   Not being able to shower for long periods of time and not eating a hot meal for weeks were some of the things that the

Election Day is Upon Us

It’s that time of the year when Election Day is here!   Election Day is always the first Tuesday in the month of November.   There is where every four years we elect a President, like in the upcoming year, 2020.   Or we elect our local government officials from our towns or representatives in the House of Representatives or the Senate.   The Government of the USA is split up into three branches of government: The Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch.   The Executive Branch is where the President is a part of and his/her group of advisors, known as their cabinet .   The President is elected every four years and can only serve a maximum of two, four-year terms .   The Legislative Branch is comprised of Congress; in the upper house is the Senate and in the lower house are the House of Representatives.   Senators are elected every six years and can serve for an unlimited amount of terms.   The representatives are elected every two years and can also ser

Celebrating Columbus Day, Or Not?

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492.   Columbus Day is always celebrated the second Monday in the month of October.   Schools across the nation have off to celebrate the discovery of America.    However, Columbus was in search of an all-water route to Asia and wanted to reach the country of India.   Once he landed in the Caribbean , he thought he landed in India; therefore, he called the Natives “Indians.”   This is why the Native Americans in North America were referred to as Indians.   Columbus treated the “Indians” very poorly.   Being that Columbus and his crew were from Europe, and no one else came into contact with the New World , many of the Indians died off because they were not immune to these new diseases.   The Indian population decreased dramatically.   Columbus also treated these Indians very poorly; he enslaved them and forced them into manual labor , for the benefit of Spain, the country that Columbus sailed for.   The European nations all benefit

Friday September 20th 2019 Climate Change Protests

The Climate Change Strike took place on Friday, September 20 th, 2019 across the globe to protest those that do not believe in climate change.  What is climate change you may ask?  Climate change is defined as a change in the weather patterns and a drastic increase and decrease in temperatures.  This is due to the fact that the Earth’s temperatures are rising because there is a hole burning through the ozone layer , and therefore, making the Earth hotter.  The Polar Ice Caps are melting at an alarming rate.  This is causing the sea levels to rise, causing coastal flooding.  It is also causing the water temperatures to increase, which is perfect for storms to form in, creating larger natural disasters, such as hurricanes .  Another name for all of these events that are occurring is Global Warming .  If you live on the coast of Long Island, or on the West Coast of California, Global Warming is impacting you every day.  This is all caused by humans abusing natural resources in ord

9/11 Remembarence Day

Happy September!  School is back in full swing. As much joy that this may bring to people, we need to stop and think about some of the memorial days at the beginning of September such as 9/ll Remembrance Day, on September 11 th .  Where were you on this day?  Were you born yet? Do you know anyone who was affected by 9/11?  I was in the first grade when the attacks on the World Trade Center occurred and changed history forever.  Kids like you in this day and age have grown up in the world with terrorism and heightened security measures, like when you have to take your shoes off while going through security in an airport and walk through those full-body scanners .  How do you feel when you are walking through security?  Safe, nervous? I know I always get a little nervous inside while my bag is going through the scanner, even though I checked my bag a thousand times for that water bottle that slipped in there.  Next time you walk through an airport or go on a plane, think abo
